Advanced BioInterface Technologies LAB @CBN-IIT is a research and technology development laboratory located at the Center of Biomolecular Nanotechnologies of the Italian Institute of Technology, Lecce, Italy. The lab activities run through the whole TRL bar, from theoretical fundamental science to (micro-/nano-)fabrication of advanced contact-based devices thanks to the lab and other CBN facilities. Topics: - Contact mechanics, lubrication and theoretical tribology - Experimental tribology (adhesion, friction, lubrication, wear, optical and electrical characterization of contact pairs) - Rheometry and spectroscopy - Surface chemical/physical functionalization and characterization - Bulk characterization We apply surface engineering to several applications, from classical tribology of polymer contacts (e.g. seals, tire-road contact, hydrogel contact, lubrication, etc.) to mm-/micro-robotics (e.g. bio-inspired microbots), tribotronics (e.g. electroadhesion, active friction, and lubrication) and mechatronic microdevices (soft sensors and actuators for humans and robots, wearable contact pairs).

TRIBOSCOPES
Our triboscopes provide comprehensive tribological analysis. They can run JKR type adhesion tests in dry and lubricated conditions, measuring forces down 1 mN sampling at 1 kHz. These triboscopes can run classical pin-on-disk and ball-on-flat tests while measuring contact areas and contact pressures through phase contrast, and frustrated total internal reflection methods. They can perform contact lubrication gap mapping with epifluorescence and percolation analysis on seals.
They can also source high voltages at high frequencies and measure contact capacitance and resistance for electrified contacts. These systems are fully automated and easy to set up. They come in two different models, one of which is modular and designed to easily switch from adhesion tests to friction tests in a few seconds.
SURFACE CHARACTERIZATION
The Agilent 6000ILM AFM is a high-resolution atomic force microscope (AFM) that integrates seamlessly with an inverted light microscope (ILM). It enables the visualization of samples with a sub-nanometer resolution, providing a comprehensive understanding of their morphology.
The Phenom XL is a desktop Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) offering high-resolution imaging at magnifications up to 200,000x. It enables visualization of surface details, particle size, and material composition at the micro and nanoscale. It has a user-friendly interface and rapid analysis capabilities.
The Bruker Dektak XT is a high-precision stylus profilometer that measures surface topography by mechanically scanning a sharp stylus across the sample surface. It provides accurate measurements of surface roughness, step heights, film thickness, and other critical dimensional parameters, with a vertical resolution of 1 Å and stylus forces of 0.03-15 mg.
The Keyence VK-X3100 is a high-resolution 3D confocal laser scanning microscope for advanced surface metrology and imaging. This instrument provides non-contact measurement and analysis of surface topography, roughness, and shape with exceptional accuracy. Utilizing confocal technology, it takes clear and precise images of complex surfaces while capturing detailed 3D surface data with a height display resolution of 0.1 nm and total magnifications up to 28800 x.
3D PRINTERS
The Asiga Freeform Pico 27 Plus is a high-resolution 3D printer that employs Digital Light Processing (DLP) technology. It uses a digital micromirror device (DMD) to project patterns of light onto a photosensitive resin, layer by layer, to create intricate 3D objects. This technology enables the production of highly detailed, small-scale models with excellent surface finish with z axis resolution down to 1mm and x-y pixel size of 27 mm.
The Formlabs Form 3B is a high-precision 3D printer that employs Low Force Stereolithography (LFS) technology. It utilizes a laser to selectively cure liquid resin, layer by layer, to create highly detailed 3D objects. LFS technology enables precise control over the curing process, resulting in high-quality prints with fine feature resolution and smooth surface finishes. It has an X-Y resolution of 25 mm and a layer thickness down to 25 mm.
The Creality Ender-5 Plus is a large-format 3D printer that utilizes Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology. It features a heated print bed and a dual-Z-axis linear rail system for improved print quality and stability. This printer is capable of printing a wide range of materials, including PLA, ABS, and TPU with a print accuracy of 0.1 mm.
The NOVA utilizes a hybrid manufacturing approach, allowing for the deposition of conductive inks and solder pastes with high accuracy. It boasts a minimum track width of approximately 100 µm,with a xyz resolution of 2.5 µm x 7 µm x 1.25 µm enabling the creation of intricate circuit patterns.. The system's automated dispensing system can handle a wide range of materials, including conductive inks, solder pastes, and even adhesives, with a dispensing resolution down to nanoliters.
The BMF S140 employs a specialized light engine to project high-resolution images onto a photocurable resin, layer by layer, achieving exceptional detail. It boasts a build volume of 100mm x 100mm x 75mm, offering a substantial workspace for microfabrication. The system achieves a lateral resolution of 10µm and a layer thickness down to 10µm, allowing for the creation of intricate features with high accuracy.
Smart Print UV is a maskless lithography equipment, based on a DMD projection technology, compatible with a wide range of resists and substrates. It can produce any 2D shapes at micron resolution (minimum feature size of 1.5 mm and alignment accuracy of 1 mm) without the need for a hard mask. It is perfectly designed for any application fields requiring surface micro patterning such as microfluidics, biotechnologies and microelectronics.
ELECTRIC AND MAGNETIC FIELD GENERATORS
The Falco Systems WMA-300 is a high-voltage, wide-bandwidth laboratory amplifier designed for demanding applications. It offers high output voltage (-150V to +150V) and current (up to 0.3 A), enabling precise control of various devices such as MEMS, piezoelectric actuators, and electro-adhesive devices. The amplifier's wide bandwidth allows for fast response times and accurate signal reproduction.
A Helmholtz coil is a specific arrangement of a pair of coils placed parallel to each other and separated by a given distance. This configuration produces a highly uniform magnetic field in the central region. Our design is optimized to produce uniform but still medium-intensity (50 mT) oscillating magnetic fields in a control volume of 8 cm3.
Laboratorio Elettrofisico high-field electromagnet is a powerful instrument designed for generating strong, static, and oscillating magnetic fields in a defined volume. The system's robust construction, high-current power supply, and efficient cooling system ensure stable and reliable operation at high field strengths.
The Glassman High Voltage generator is designed to generate stable high voltage outputs (from a few hundred V to hundreds of kV) for a wide range of scientific, industrial, and medical applications. It offers adjustable voltage and current settings, enabling precise control of the output power.
RHEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS
The Anton Paar MCR 702e is a high-end rotational rheometer designed for comprehensive material characterization. It offers a wide torque, enabling precise analysis of diverse materials from low-viscosity liquids to solid materials. The rheometer's advanced motor and air-bearing technology allows for highly accurate measurements and minimal instrument compliance, measuring torques from few nNm to 230 mNm with temperatures up to 1000 °C, applying electric or magnetic fields during the measurement.
The Dataphysics OCA 15Pro is a high-precision optical contact angle measuring instrument designed for detailed surface analysis. enables comprehensive characterization of surface wettability and interfacial properties. The system's high-resolution camera and precise liquid dispensing system allow for accurate and reproducible measurements on various sample types and sizes.

The METTLER TOLEDO SevenExcellence pH-meter is a multi-channel benchtop instrument designed for precise measurement of various parameters, including pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and ion concentration.
